Our Students Win 2024 MindThePlastic Challenge with Sustainable Recycling Concept

Greensprings emerged as the champions of the 2024 MindThePlastic Naija Challenge, organized by the MindThePlastic Naija Capstone Group from the School of Politics, Policy, and Governance (SPPG).

The challenge aims to address Lagos’ growing plastic waste problem, where an estimated 870,000 tonnes of waste are generated each year, posing critical threats to both public health and the environment.

Eight students from our Years 8 to 11 proposed a closed-loop recycling process to transform common plastic waste types — HDPE, PET, and LDPE — into durable, sustainable products, including customized interlocking blocks and road tiles.

The competition, which began in August and concluded on October 19th, 2024, brought together students from various schools across Lagos to present solutions to the city’s plastic waste crisis.

Our student’s journey to the top was marked by critical thinking and teamwork guided by a Biology teacher at our Lekki campus.

The students’ solution offered a practical recycling approach and carried a revenue-generating model to fund future environmental projects.

Their successful project earned them first place in the competition, securing a 1 million naira (₦1,000,000) prize and highlighting the potential of youth-led initiatives in tackling pressing environmental issues.
